The student residence

· Casa Garcia ·

Casa García is a historic building in Castellciutat.
The renovation project was designed to preserve, as far as possible, the character and essence of the original building.

The foundations and ground floor of the building house a 16th-century farmhouse built into the rock, while the upper floors were added in an extension from the late 19th century. Until a couple of decades ago, it was a shop that supplied the people of Castellciutat with goods, wine and coffee — which they ground right there on the premises — for years.

The facilities of our first exclusive student residence in La Seu d’Urgell – la resi – Casa García, are those of a fantastic four-storey building with capacity for 18 students, who can choose between a single room or a shared double room. The bathrooms and showers are spacious and fully equipped with every comfort. At – la resi – Casa García, the bathroom and shower ratio is one for every 2.5 residents.

The refurbishment was carried out with great care to achieve maximum energy efficiency and savings.

Photovoltaic panels have been installed for self-generated energy, taking advantage of the building’s south/southeast orientation, along with an air-source heat pump system and exterior ETICS insulation…

Every space in the student residence — bedrooms, bathrooms, showers, the library area, kitchen and dining room — is fitted with low-temperature radiators, backed up by heat pumps in certain areas, as well as high-speed wifi, making it easier for students to study and enjoy their free time.

The residence also has a set of usage guidelines and recommendations for residents, aimed at the efficient use of natural resources, reducing food waste, encouraging recycling, sustainable mobility and other circular economy measures.

There is nothing like having every service a young person needs right here, without ever having to leave the residence premises. Plus, our secret is that you will share amazing moments with your peers in top-notch common areas. It is a complete, all-in-one experience.

Casa García, as the building housing the residence is known, was historically a working shop in the village of Castellciutat. Run by Mrs. Consuelo Pasqués, widow of Victoriano Cerdaña, it supplied the people of Castellciutat with goods, wine and coffee — which they ground right there on the premises — for years. In fact, the building’s reception still keeps the restored sign and other elements from the old shop, located right on the Camí de la Seu.

The building is a former 16th-century farmhouse built into the rock, later extended with additions from the 19th century onward. In 2024, the property’s new owners carried out a full renovation to help recover a piece of the town’s historical and cultural heritage. The project’s guiding principle was to preserve the look of the existing building, which was part of the shared memory of the village’s residents.

The original signage, façade and layout have been preserved to safeguard the heritage and memory of what this space once was. Among the elements we’ve kept are the sign itself and the space once occupied by the shop on part of the ground floor, including the wooden fridge — fully restored and still working — dating back to the mid-20th century. Although the building now serves a different purpose, opening the residence means not just reopening a building and a shop that had been closed, but also bringing more life to the only retail and food business still open today in the heart of Castellciutat.

The building sits in a privileged setting: its magnificent location is at the eastern entrance to Castellciutat, just 30 metres from Plaça de l’Arbre, with an unbeatable orientation over the river Valira. Casa García has 6 single rooms and 6 double rooms, each one exclusive, with sunlight and unbeatable views over the La Seu d’Urgell valley and the Cadí mountain range.

There are also private-use terraces with a chill-out area next to the kitchen and dining room, plus a barbecue area and bike parking.

Common areas: a laundry and ironing area, a TV and gaming area, and a study space are among the other spaces where you’ll find every detail covered.
